This process of abstraction is so important that I want to elaborate upon it by describing the historical development of simple graphs and charts. Somewhat surprisingly, these abstract graphical methods are more recent inventions than many techniques of photorealism such as perspective and shading. This is often quite surprising to many students and researchers in visualization, who often think that virtual reality is the holy grail of scientific visualization.
