Realism is not the whole story. And more important direction is abstraction and abstract images.

I want to make the case using two lines of arguments. The first is to look at the history of image making and argue that it regularly involves moving from realistic to abstract image representations. The second is to describe why abstract image representations are often better than realistic ones.
